Atlanta Public Schools: Transforming Learning Through Dual Minecraft Initiatives

26 Jan 2026 Minecraft Education Esports around the world

Atlanta Public Schools is redefining the modern classroom by leveraging the immersive power of Minecraft Education to engage students across all grade levels. While the district has utilized the platform for several years, it has now formalized two distinct pathways for student growth: the civic-focused Level Up Atlanta Challenge and a competitive Minecraft Esports League.

The Level Up Atlanta Challenge is a districtwide initiative open to all students in Grades K–12. This program moves beyond the classroom walls by tasking learners with solving real-world urban issues facing their city. Instead of completing standard worksheets, students use Minecraft to rethink traffic congestion, address local food deserts, and imagine sustainable, affordable housing solutions. Some of the most innovative designs are shared with civic leaders for review and consideration. Winning students have even been recognized at the Mayor’s Year of the Youth event.

A More Diverse, More Inclusive Esport (Multiplayer Enabled)

The Minecraft Esports League, specifically designed for students in Grades K–8, offers a team-based alternative to traditional competitive sports. In this program, schools form teams of five students who compete against other campuses to solve complex problems within a digital arena. Over the past year, this competitive format has seen significant engagement, with students participating in 33 rounds of play. Unlike traditional gaming that may prioritize reaction speed, these competitions focus on a timed prompt where students are evaluated based on a specific rubric emphasizing collaboration, creativity, and technical functionality.

Learning the Game and the Skills That Matter

Dr. Natasha Rachell, Director of Instructional Technology, notes that the program allows a diverse group of students to shine, including those who are shy or have developmental needs.

"With Minecraft, students are learning to collaborate, to communicate, and do so critically," Rachell explains, adding that it is "mind-blowing to see the talent all our students possess when they create."

From Local Builds to Districtwide Impact

The impact of these initiatives extends into the local community. Last year, more than 300 students participated across the district in both events, and the most innovative designs from the Level Up Atlanta Challenge were shared with civic leaders for review. Winners were even recognized by the Mayor at his Year of the Youth event.

Engaging Learners, Unlocking Imagination

Content Integration Specialist Krynica Drake observes that through these programs, students discover how their ideas can take shape in a shared digital world.

"The kids are able to understand, oh, I can actually be an engineer," she explains.

Math educator Dr. Melissa Dandy-Walker highlights that the programs open up a world of possibilities for students, allowing them to branch out and simply be themselves while tackling serious problems.

Collaboration as the Core Mechanic

Minecraft esports places collaboration at the center of learning. Drake adds that the league allows educators to focus on essential soft skills, as students must identify their individual strengths and decide how to bring their collective ideas to life.

"Some of the quietest kids do the best building," Drake notes. "When you put those together, they flourish."

New Horizons of Success (XP Gained)

Success is defined by more than just winning a round; it is about connecting students' passions to real life.

"School used to feel separate from reality," Drake says. "Now ideas can expand beyond the classroom. That’s real power.”

Natasha Rachell agrees, noting that seeing students participate who might not get involved in other sports is a true joy.

The Real Win Condition

By integrating Minecraft Education into its programming, Atlanta Public Schools has created a learning community where students collaborate, create, and gain confidence while having fun. Dr. Dandy-Walker recalls that coaches have described competition days as the "best day" of students' lives.

Worlds loaded. Teams ready. Learning...officially LEVELED UP.
