Back to school!

To help kids who are going back to school in a virtual environment, we've created a custom Minecraft world that provides a fun new way for classmates to introduce themselves to one another and remind themselves of a few rules for good digital citizenship in the process.

When students arrive in this Minecraft classroom, they’ll first meet the teacher who will prompt them to explore and create something unique on the platform to introduce themselves to their new class. Their creation is intended to be screen captured and shared with classmates through Flipgrid or through screen sharing via Microsoft Teams. On the wall of the classroom students will find posters showing rules for digital citizenship. The classroom is populated with NPCs that offer inspiration for the student's creation. At the back of the class are NPCs who challenge the student with situations to test their digital citizenship knowledge.

To get started, download the provided template and double click to open in Minecraft: Education Edition. From the game menu, choose Play, Create New, Templates. Choose "Back to School". The world is intended to be played independently by the student and then shared either through video recording or in real time.

To submit a Flipgrid video of the students creation follow these steps:

1) With Minecraft open on your computer, toggle to Flipgrid using Alt+Tab or by using the buttons on your computer’s task bar

2) Open your class’ Flipgrid

3) Click the plus to start a new Flipgrid video

4) Click the three dots “…” to the left of the camera icon on the bottom of the Flipgrid Record screen

5) Choose “Screen Recording” and click “Start the Capture” Button

6) Choose “Your Entire Screen” tab

7) Click “Share” button

8) Toggle back to Minecraft using Alt+Tab or by using the buttons on your computer’s task bar

9) You’re now recording everything you seen in Minecraft. Use your microphone to talk about your creation!

10) When you’re done, use Alt+Tab or your task bar to return to Flipgrid to click “Stop Sharing”
