Guiding Ideas

The students will plan and design a city which is environment-friendly and is a carbon neutral city. It uses self- sustaining renewable sources of energy. The city can meet its own demands for food and water for human beings. Street lights will have solar panels. Homes will run on solar panels. The students will explore non-polluting means of transport. The city will have adequate green spaces. Adequate public transport is provided and public transport is non-polluting. The city has its own farmlands for producing crops. Animal husbandry is taken up in the city. The city provides safe and affordable housing for the people. The city has a recycling plant to recycle waste.

Student Activities

Students will work in the creative mode. They will build up a city which is eco-friendly and sustainable. The energy requirement of the city will be met by solar energy and wind energy. Street lights will have solar panels. They will find out non-polluting means of public transport like minerails. Ferries and boats will take place from one place to another. A recycling plant will be set up to manage waste. Also, certain restricted areas will be built up using ‘deny blocks’.

Students can have a Skype session with other students living in sustainable cities to find out how they can create a world of eco-city.

Performance Expectations

It will help students build 21st Century Learning Design. It will promote important skills in students. They will work in collaboration and build up different areas of the city. Knowledge construction will be involved where students think and come up with novel ideas about how to build a city which is green and sustainable. It will involve solving real-world problems as there is a rapid growth in cities in the developing world and the cities need to devise ways to be sustainable. The project will lead to innovation and creativity among students. Also, it will be ICT integrated learning. The students will organise, monitor and take control of their learning.
