Start by investigating these questions with your students:
Why is Base 10 Called Base 10?
Is there such a number as “sixty twelve”? (the video in the Single Player World explains this).
What happens when any place value reaches 10?
How is this related to expanded form?
Part 1: Single Player World
Students will load the attached world designated NBT Single Player World. They will enter the hub area. Speak to the NPC on the left titled Regrouping to enter the practice area.
1) Watch the instructional video individually or as a class.
2) Speak to the NPCs and complete each of the problems.
5) BONUS: Make a video of you regrouping a number
Extension: Minecraft Math Gladiator World
Once students finish the Single Player world you can load the attached Mincraft Math Gladiator World for a more advanced challenge. After loading the world on your own computer, pause the game an choose "Start Hosting". Share the code with the class.

Once all students have entered the world, find the NPC marked Level 4 press the button. Students will speak to the game show host to enter the math battle area. Students will speak to the NPCs to answer problems related to this standard. For each correct answer students will be awarded Minecraft gear. When the students are prepared, find and push the button hidden behind the stairs to summon the Minecraft Wither Boss into the battle area. Students can continue answering math questions to get more gear until they are able to defeat the boss.
Students were able to:
1) Make a video of them explaining how to regroup numbers in Minecraft.
2) Correctly regrouped and documented all problems in the practice world.
3) Correctly regrouped and documented all problems in the Wither Battle area.
