Learning Objectives

  • Research into Wind Turbines and decide on a design
  • Develop an understanding of the variables that can affect the power output of a wind turbine
  • Design and build a Wind Turbine that produces the most current

Guiding Ideas

In this Challenge learners will be given a brief to design a wind turbine that produces the most current. Learners will need to investigate wind turbines to decide on their design. Before moving on to designing the wind turbine, learners will need to analyse the brief in order to decide on the requirements of their wind turbine.

Could Redstone be used to turn the motor of the wind turbine?

Introductory & Guiding Questions: 

  • What is the purpose of a Wind Turbine?
  • What are the main aspects of a Wind Turbine?
  • What are the possible locations for a Wind Turbine?
  • Are there any restrictions on your Wind Turbine?
  • What will you need to know before you design your Wind Turbine?

 

Student Activities

The Challenge is made up of three distinct steps that will take approx. 3+ hrs.

Step One:

Analyse the brief and decide on the requirements for their design of a wind turbine. The design requirements will act as a success criteria for the build.

Learners will need to identify a variable that greatly affects the output power.

Step Two:

Learners will design and build their Wind Turbine using Minecraft: Education Edition and use and NPC to justify their design. NPC could link out to document justifying design and how it meets the design requirements.

Step Three:

Review build of Wind Turbine explaining how the variable they identified in Step One effects the output power of the wind turbine.
