Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to discover the probability of items dropped.
  • Students will play in survival mode to collect items from certain mobs or blocks.
  • Students will enter data into a spread sheet or table.
  • Students will calculate their personal drop rates via a decimal probability and a percentage.

Guiding Ideas

How often do instances of drops occur?

Are drops in Minecraft, and patterns in nature, random, or do they happen at a regular rate?

Does probability change as more data is collected?

Student Activities

Students will play in survival mode. Students will play with cheats disabled. Students should spawn on a pressure plate, which revokes world builder.

Students will speak with Archimedes to determine their goals. Students will pick what items they would like to collect. For example, rotten flesh from Zombies, bones from Skeletons, flint from Gravel, and seeds from Grass. Students will work in pairs to count each time one of their items is broken or mobs are defeated and track them on the calculations sheet. Students will also tabulate when each item is dropped.

When time is up, students will calculate the probability of each instance occurring by determining the items dropped per blocks broken, first in fractional form, and then in percentage.

After this has been completed, the teacher may choose to put all of that data together to see how many items were dropped in all, thereby collecting additional data and information through a larger sample size. Students may analyze how a larger sample size affects the percentage and probability of an item being dropped.

Students will begin with a Camera, Portfolio, and Map. The teacher may choose to have students documents the items being collected in their portfolio, via the camera and a caption.

Performance Expectations

Students will work collaboratively to help set probability straight for Archimedes.

Students will be able to calculate the probability via a percentage and decimal.

Students will be able to pool their data together to compare how larger sample sizes affect data.

Students will document their learning and items via the camera and portfolio.
