Learning Objectives

  • 1- Learn the 4 properties of magma viscosity
  • 2- Learn that magma forms a composite volcano
  • 3- Learn that magma forms a shield volcano
  • 4- Know the types of explosive activity of a volcano
  • 5- Learn what functions an observatory performs
  • 6- Know where we can find volcanic bombs
  • 7- Know where we can find lava fountains
  • 8- Know the name of famous volcanos

Guiding Ideas

The Earth is a true "hot planet", not for the temperatures that are registered to the surface, but because of the high internal heat it possesses, what In some areas of its interior it gets to melt rocks and generate magma. In this unit we will see:

-There are several types of volcanic activity, depending on viscosity of magma the more viscous it is a magma, more slowly it flows and more defectives have the gases to exit, which causes explosions frequent and more abundance of pyroclastic materials. Since lava is denser, it progresses slowly and slowly solidify before, and form a volcanic cone high and with a strong one pending.

Taking these characteristics into account, they can be differentiated five main types of volcanic activity. Just like it is you can see it in the bottom table, an index is called, called of volcanic explosion (IEV), which is calculated from various parameters, such as the volume of material emitted or the height of the eruptive column. This value is very useful for the foresight of eruptions and the risks that they generate the volcanoes

Student Activities

VOLCANO VILLAGE:

With portfolio and camera students must find the 4 properties of magma viscosity.

COMPOSITE VOLCANO:

Make photos of the structure and the volcanic bomb. Discovered the types of viscosity magma. . Also learn what is the function of a volcano observatory

SHIELD VOLCANO:

Make photos of the structure and discovered the types of viscosity magma. students can build their own  volcano observatory.

FINAL ACTIVITY

After touring the Volcano Park. The students have to follow the instructions at the end of the road and they must build their own volcano according to the characteristics of the magma

Performance Expectations

The teacher must do a class guided by Volcano Park. The students after finishing the visit by the Volcano Park and after having acquired the concepts of the lesson.

Finally groups of 3 or 4 students must be made. The various groups must build a volcano based on the characteristics of the magma. In the final activity, students must apply the concepts learned about the viscosity of magma, type of activity, material expelled, etc. and build the volcano with the corresponding structure.

The timing depends on the teacher and the skill of the students with the Minecraft tool.
