Time Capsule SoW and Lesson Support

The Scheme of Work (SoW) provides an overarching view of the project and each Lesson Support document provides the granularity for each stage.

Learning Objectives

  • Research a specific period of history
  • Create a time capsule to represent a period of history
  • Write an information text about a period of history
  • Use education features to findings with a wider audience

Guiding Ideas

Learners will conduct research to produce a time capsule, including different objects, places or people, to represent a particular ‘moment in time’. This series of lessons could be adapted to suit any topic or theme. It could be based around a person, a particular place or time period. Learners will research their chosen topic and use this research to identify the key features or themes to be re-created in Minecraft: Education Edition. They will use other tools such as Office 365 to create information texts to explain their choices and can use Minecraft: Education Edition features such as signs and NPCs to link to this information. At the end of the project, learners will explore the shared world and the builds made by other groups and access the supporting information via the NPCs.

Introductory Questions:

  • What would you include in a time capsule?
  • How will you create this in Minecraft: Education Edition?
  • How will you share your time capsule with others?

Student Activities

Research 1-2 hrs.

  • Learners will decide on an area to focus their project. This could link to a school topic or theme, for example a period in time such as the Romans or Ancient Egyptians
  • Learners will identify three important or memorable items (objects, places or events) to recreate in their ‘time capsule’ world in Minecraft: Education Edition. They will research this item in depth

Plan and Build item 1: Objects 3+ hrs.

From the research the learners have carried out they will:

  • Choose three important objects from a period in history
  • Produce an information document using their chosen program from Office 365, such as Word, Sway or PowerPoint
  • Create a plan, success criteria and build schedule to create the objects in Minecraft: Education Edition

Plan and Build item 2: Place 3+ hrs.

  • Produce an information document using their chosen program from Office 365, such as Word, Sway or PowerPoint
  • Create a plan, success criteria and build schedule to create the place in Minecraft: Education Edition

Use Education Features to Share Information1-2 hrs.

  • Learners will finalise their ‘time capsule’ world by adding Non-Player Characters (NPCs) to provide links to their external documents providing more information about each item in their time capsule

Evaluation and Reflection 1-2 hrs.

  • This stage could be done either as a self-assessment activity, where learners evaluate their own worlds, or as peer-assessment where learners visit another world and comment on their choices
  • The learners will use the camera and Book & Quill features to record their findings e.g. what they found out about each feature or why they think it was chosen to represent the topic
