Learning Objectives

  • Develop creative writing in Minecraft: Education Edition
  • Work collaboratively to find solutions to problems

Guiding Ideas

In this Challenge learners will join the collaborative Survival Island world and experience life marooned on an island. They will explore the island and work collaboratively to survive. Teacher will encourage learners to discuss feelings throughout the task and create a diary to document their journey.

Introductory Questions: 

  • What resources will you need to survive?
  • What roles and responsibilities will each group member have?
  • What items will you need to craft to survive?

 

Student Activities

The Challenge is made up of three distinct steps that will take approx. 2 hrs.

Step One:

Class discussion about working and collaborating online. Write a list of rules for working effectively in a collaboration online environment.

Step Two:

Learners are marooned on a desert island. They will explore the island and work collaboratively to survive. They will use the camera to take pictures of their adventure. Teacher to host the island world. The learners will be given a code to join. There will be regular discussions/questioning throughout this session. Groups of learners to discuss what they have done/found and discuss how they are feeling. Did they build a shelter? If so, which resources did they find/which materials were suitable?

Step Three:

Learners will write a success criteria for a diary. Learners will use the Book and Quill to write their diary. They can insert pictures they took with their camera. Learners will sign their finished diary.

Teacher will teleport all learners to one area in the world and learners will place their signed books in the world for others to read. Learners will use success criteria to peer assess and provide feedback on each other’s finished diaries. Learners to export their diaries and save appropriately.
