Learning Objectives

  • Students will recognize that in a fire there is little time to organize and plan and exits with meeting spots should be understood ahead of time
  • Students will work in pairs or individually using a demo Smart Home in MinecraftEDU to indicate the escape path from each location in the home with Glowstone or another teacher suggested material
  • After students successfully map out the fire escape routes in the demo MinecraftEDU home and choose a family meeting location they will then turn their attention to their own real life living arrangement and create an exit plan for their family.

Guiding Ideas

Practice makes perfect so using the MinecraftEDU demo home to create a fire exit strategy will allow the students the time for critical thought needed to get their real life strategies perfect!

Working in pairs will allow students to dialogue with someone as they determine the best exit strategy.

Can students determine safe and speedy routes of exit in a model home in MinecraftEDU?

Can students translate the practice fire escape plan into a real plan for their family?

Student Activities

Students will enter the world file alone or in pairs.

They will tour the house to become very familiar with it (There are fun switches etc....)

They will begin using Glowstone to map fire escape routes out of the house from each location. This will involve the destruction of some of the floor possibly.

They will choose a familiar family meeting place outside.

They will create a real fire escape plan for their own home and families.

Performance Expectations

Did students tour the home to become fully familiar with all rooms and spaces?

Did students lay glowstone to mark safe and speedy routes out of the home from each space?

Did students lead the route to a familiar and safe meeting location?

Did students translate this practice into a working fire escape route for their home and families?

***** A special shout out to the home designer DireWolf314159. Without builders like this lesson would be very difficult to find!
