The Empathizing Caregiver
Aging is a natural process, which inevitably occurs in human life cycle. We need to nurture in students the ability to empathize with senior citizens
Aging is a natural process, which inevitably occurs in the human life cycle. It brings with a host of challenges in the life of the elderly, which are mostly engineered by the changes in their body, mind, thought process and the living patterns. Can the students develop unique communication skills and strategies to deal with older adults?
Some of the concerns the elderly might have been- disease, physical aging, physical assistance, financial security, health care costs, loneliness, abuse or neglect, transportation, changing social climate etc Can the students empathize with the elderly or senior citizens by themselves in their shoes for a while so you they could imagine what it is they are going through. When we are empathetic caregivers, we have the ability to understand what the person we are caring for is dealing with. By trying to see life from their point of view, will the students be able to better reflect on their thoughts and feelings? Students will examine their situation, generate creative solutions, critically examine and choose solutions that will best help and finally implement them while building the family a dream home.

Students in groups shall select from a number of Minecrafian senior citizens who are suffering from issues related to old age and loneliness. They would visit such cases in their neighborhood or read about them, spend adequate time on research and then creatively generate a list of possible solutions that could be implemented into a NEW OLD AGE HOME for these senior citizens.
Students shall list out the possible solutions and then critically choose the solutions that they feel are technically feasible and are the best to solve the problems of the ailing elderly. This could mean a complete transformation of the land or the relocation itself. They shall present the solutions to their teacher along with a timeframe to complete.
A teacher may supervise the project by reviewing social and economic aspects of the solutions provided and approve if they feel that the solutions are technically and ethically sound too for the senior citizens.
Students then spend their allotted time working on the home for the family and complete the BIG REVEAL via screenshots. They could extend time frames with permission, if required and submit the project for evaluation.
Certificates of “The Empathizing Caregiver”, could be considered to the deserving students or groups. This project shall enhance critical thinking, collaborative and communication skills of students along with nurturing the value of empathy in them, so crucial for strengthening character.
Students will select and review a random Minecraftian senior citizen/citizens who are in need of assistance.
A brainstorming session including terraforming and relocation solutions shall be enabled by the students.
Students shall critically select the best possible solution, after critically analyzing all possibilities and give reasons for selection or rejection of solutions.
Students will present their chosen solution plan to their project head teacher and respond to any improvement requests
Students shall proceed to work within the timeframe agreed upon.
Students will capture the final build digitally and present it to their project head teacher.
Students shall be happy and feel good about the task accomplished, especially on the nurturing of the human value- empathy.
