Learning Objectives

  • To learn the importance of staying safe
  • To design and build a game that includes a series of mazes with added obstacles
  • To create and debug algorithms using Code Builder

Guiding Ideas

In this Challenge learners will learn about the dangers of staying safe and being seen in the outside world. They will design and build a series of mazes/obstacles (which could include water, fire, darkness etc) within Minecraft: Education Edition and share this world with their fellow learners. Using the shared world and Code Builder (accessed from within Minecraft: Education Edition) they will create a set of algorithms to safely guide their Agent through each section of the maze.

Introductory Questions:

  • Why is it important to stay safe?
  • What dangers will you include in your maze?
  • What can you do if your algorithm doesn’t work as expected?

Student Activities

The Challenge is made up of three distinct steps that will take approx. 3 hrs.

Step One:

Discuss how we can stay safe and be seen in the outside world highlighting dangers such as water, fire, darkness etc. Learners will then research maze type games and design their own on squared or graph paper.

Step Two:

Learners will build their maze game in Minecraft: Education Edition using the Blocks of Grass world and use features such as the chalkboard and NPCs to add written information explaining what is needed to safely complete each section of the game.

Step Three:

Learners will now access another learner’s maze in the Minecraft: Education Edition Blocks of Grass world that has been shared with them. Learners will take note of the instructions and use Code Builder to code their Agent to move safely and complete each section of the game. Learners may need to debug their algorithm if they don’t work out as expected.
