Learning Objectives

  • At the end of this lesson, students will be able to • Describe different basic farming methods used in various parts of the world • Explain why some sustainable farming practices are used in some areas than others

Guiding Ideas

Students will explore and understand the core question, “How will we sustainably feed 9 billion people by the year 2050?” and begin to think about the challenges and opportunities presented by this question.

• How do farmers grow food around the world?

• What are the environmental benefit of sustainable agriculture?

• Where did various farming practices originate or its history?

• Where it is currently practiced and why it grown in that location?

• How will your attitude be affected by learning about these values?

 

Student Activities

TASK: Students undertake the research project on one type of sustainable farming and demonstrate their understanding of sustainable agriculture through visual presentation of their research project in Minecraft World and write descriptions to support their understanding using writing tools in Minecraft Education Edition.

Groupwork:

Students will work in groups to discuss and agree upon the details that they want to depict about the farming methodology research. Upon brainstorming about the same each student work in a collaborative mode in the same world to create sustainable farming portfolio as researched. Students will use elements using Minecraft sign blocks like slate, poster and/or boards and book & quill tools to create a more interactive experience for the reader.

Introduction to concepts (45-60 minutes)

1. Start activity with a KWL chart or word wall (see samples in lesson plan 1). Explain vocabulary and learning objectives.

2. Have students read “How do farmers grow food around the world?” in Biodiversity, food and farming for a healthy planet.

3. Ask students to explain there are many different ways that farmers grow different kinds of food around the world. Further explanation of agriculture terminology and various growing methods may be needed.

 

Project work

Introduce or review research and investigation techniques:

a. identify a research question,

b. identify possible sources of information such as books, videos, internet encyclopaedias, reliable websites, resource people in your community,

c. read or talk with information sources,

d. record your notes,

e. organize your notes,

f. summarize your main findings and conclusion.

 

Presentation

 

As a group choose one method of farming to work on and find out in detail about the same to depict it in Minecraft Education Edition world.

 

Performance Expectations

All students will work in collaboratively in the given world to explain and cite from the research.

Students work should

• have a clear identifiable method of sustainable farming

• Students should support their assertion with appropriate reasoning for their selection of farming method.

• have used telling tools including:

o slate

o poster

o board

o sign

o NPCs
