Surviving the Blitz SoW and Lesson Support

The Scheme of Work (SoW) provides an overarching view of the project and each Lesson Support document provides the granularity for each stage.

Learning Objectives

  • To use different methods of collecting information
  • To develop awareness of the Blitz and the effect war had on civilians
  • To develop understanding of how shelters were used during the Blitz (specifically Anderson and Morrison shelters)
  • To create a plan and design for their build
  • To build a structure on Minecraft: Education Edition using Code Builder and Agent
  • To use block code and algorithms accurately
  • To share information and hyperlink via NPCs. Use ‘Signs’ and ‘Chalkboards’ to provide information

Guiding Ideas

Learners will research the Blitz and the effect of World War Two on civilians, they will find out about the different types of shelters used during the Blitz and use this knowledge to design and create their own, using mathematical skills to ensure their shelter is constructed to their correct dimensions.

Learners will explore how to use Code Builder within Minecraft: Education Edition to construct a building of their own design.

Learners will combine their skills and research to code their Agent to build their shelter. Once completed learners will have the opportunity to visit the shelters and use these as a stimulus for writing.

Introductory & Essential Questions:

  • How did people protect themselves during the Blitz?
  • Why were air raid shelters used to protect people?
  • What is an algorithm?
  • How can you code Agent to build a shelter in Minecraft: Education Edition?
  • How will you share your information with others?

Student Activities

Blitz Research 2+ hrs.

  • Learners watch a video clip about the Blitz and formulate research questions
  • Learners use a range of sources to research the Blitz

Shelter Research & plan 2+ hrs.

  • Learners create a list of characteristics for an air raid shelter
  • Learners plan and design their own air raid shelter to build in Minecraft: Education Edition

Code Builder Tutorial 2+ hrs.

  • Learners are introduced to the Code Builder Tutorials in Minecraft: Education Edition
  • Learners build a simple structure with Agent and Code Builder

Building and Air Raid Shelter 2-4 hrs.

  • Learners use research to plan an air raid shelter in Minecraft: Education Edition
  • Learners develop algorithms to programme Agent to build their air raid shelter
  • Learners support Agent by building more complicated parts of their design manually

Inspiring Writing and Information Sharing 2+ hrs.

  • Learners will use their finished builds to inspire a piece of writing, this could include letters or diaries from somebody within the shelter, an information text about different types of shelters or instructions of how to use Code Builder to create a shelter within Minecraft: Education Edition
  • Learners will add additional information to their builds via Chalkboards etc.
