Learning Objectives

  • • Create a piece of digital 3D art using our names as inspiration.
  • • Ontario Visual Arts Grade 6 Overall Expectation -- Creating and Presenting: Apply the creative process to produce art works in a variety of traditional two- and three-dimensional forms, as well as multimedia art works, that communicate feelings, ideas, and understandings, using elements, principles, and techniques of visual arts as well as current media technologies.
  • • D1.4 use a variety of materials, tools, techniques, and technologies to determine solutions to design challenges.

Guiding Ideas

• Which of your names will you use for your sculpture? Why are you choosing these names and leaving others out?

• Which blocks and/or colours of materials will you choose for your name, or the letters of your name? Will you select materials or colours that meaningful in deeper ways to you, or will you make decisions strictly on aesthetics (how they look)?

• Will your sculpture by land-bound (on the ground), free floating in the air, or a combination of the two? How does changing your idea about the spaces your sculpture will fill change the final feel and image?

• When your sculpture is complete, construct one or more "viewing benches" to communicate the best or most interesting angles that audiences are invited to sit and experience your sculpture.

• What will the dimensions of your letters be? What will the length, height, and width of each letter be? Will you use only a single 1x1 block and change the height to make the letters, or will you make them wider? Why or why not?

• Will you display your name using a horizontal or vertical (axis)? Since this is a 3D environment, might you decide to space the letters out using length, width, height and DEPTH? How would this change your design and the place you will want the audience to stand when viewing your sculpture?

Extension Guiding Questions

• Extension 1: Can you use redstone circuits to light up some, all, or rotating parts of your name?

• Extension 2: If you've used redstone circuits to light up your name, will you have switches that the audience can turn on and off? If so, place them near your viewing benches.

Follow these Steps to Success

1. Load a "blocks of grass" world in Creative & Peaceful (tip: Turn off mobs to avoid being interrupted by animals and turn off day/night and weather cycles to be able to keep building in the beautiful blue sky!)

2. Use the guiding questions above to make decisions about your sculpture's size, design, space, dimensions, and materials.

3. Craft & learn! Remember to take photos using the Camera & Portfolio to document your creative process before, during, and after completion.

4. When you're satisfied with your creation, plan and build your "viewing benches".

5. Take pictures of your sculpture from each of the viewing benches you've made & label them in the Portfolio.

6. Proofread, sign, and export your Portfolio to OneDrive to share with your teacher and classmates.

Extension Challenges

Complete one, some, or all of these extension activities if you wish. Each challenge is slightly more complicated or time-consuming than the last.

• Use redstone circuits to light up some, all, or rotating parts of your name.

• Place switches near the viewing benches for your audience to turn the lights on or off.

• Reinitiate the day/night cycle and set the lights to come on automatically when it's dark.

• Make a tutorial video teaching others how to craft their name in Minecraft lights and upload it to our Brightspace classroom.

Performance Expectations

• engage in design thinking to plan and create a 3D sculpture of specific dimensions to communicate a specific idea (their name)

• be able to explain their design process and decisions based on the Guiding Questions when showcasing their work to their peers or in written or oral conference with their teacher

• document their work using the Camera & Portfolio before, during, and after the finished product

• export their Portfolio to OneDrive and share it with the teacher and/or their peers
