Learning Objectives

  • KH-025 Relate stories of European explorers and traders in their search for new lands or the Northwest Passage.
  • KP-047 Identify reasons why Europeans expanded their territories to include North America

Guiding Ideas

1. Why would anyone want to leave their country and live somewhere else?

2. How long do you think it took to cross the Atlantic ocean in 1700?

3. Do you think traveling by ship is faster than by plane? Did planes exist back then?

4. What are some other reasons why you think people would explore an unknown land to them?

Student Activities

Students will explore what life was like crossing the Atlantic ocean on their way to the New World. Once they explored the ship, they will answer key comprehension questions as well as write a journal entry based on their experiences.

Performance Expectations

Students will be able to describe dangers of Atlantic travel in the 1600's.

Students will be able to apply their knowledge to create a journal entry.
