Pixel Art SoW and Lesson Support


The Scheme of Work (SoW) provides an overarching view of the project and each Lesson Support document provides the granularity for each stage.

Learning Objectives

  • Enquire and investigate the history of pixel art, popular pixel artists and digital designers
  • Evaluate different designs and approaches to pixel art
  • Work collaboratively to create a detailed plan of what to build in the Minecraft: Education Edition gallery- with specific areas for visitors to interact
  • Work collaboratively to a create ‘Pixel Art Gallery’ in Minecraft: Education Edition
  • Create a screen recording and voiceover walk-through of the ‘Pixel Art Gallery’

Guiding Ideas

This lesson is organised into 5 Stages and explores linking expressive arts in the digital world and includes:

  • Research, planning and producing pixel art
  • Developing an understanding of how this translates into digital art and gaming
  • Displaying the art pieces for maximum audience appreciation in a suitable environment
  • Collaborating and sharing output for reflection

Introductory Questions:

  • What is Pixel Art?
  • What is the history / story behind Pixel Art?
  • How do you create Pixel Art?
  • What spaces are required in an Art Gallery to make it an enjoyable experience for visitors?
  • How do you know if an Art Gallery has an effective design i.e. for access, for hospitality, for displaying works of art?
  • What information will you include in your building plan?
  • How will you work collaboratively to build a ‘Pixel Art Gallery?’
  • How will you share information about your build with visitors to the gallery?

Student Activities

Research 1-2 hrs.

  • Learners investigate artists and digital designers in the field.
  • Collect and evaluate examples of pixel art, and forming their own opinions about each example

Planning 1-2 hrs.

  • Learners use research, to agree on examples/pictures they want to include in their gallery
  • Create a detailed plan for a ‘Pixel Art Gallery’ world, considering scale and layout

The Build 4+ hrs.

  • Learners follow their detailed plan and create a build to represent their pixel art pieces within the gallery
  • Work collaboratively to build pixel art within Minecraft: Education Edition

Information Sharing 2+ hrs.

  • Learners create content information about their pixel art to be shared within their build via NPCs. The information format could be in Sway, PowerPoint or online document and hyperlinked from appropriately placed NPCs

Video Walkthrough 2+ hrs.

  • Create a screen recording and voiceover walk-through of their gallery and pixel art pieces to share their creativity with a wider audience
