Student design a heart - inlduing the 4 chambers. Different coloured fluids represent oxygenatied and deoxygenated blood moving through the heart.

Guiding Ideas

How does blod travel around the heart? What are the functions of the different chambers and valves?

Why is the left hand side of the heart bigger than the right hand side?

How are the heart and lungs connected? What are the names of those blood vessels, and what type of blood travels between them?

 

Student Activities

Design and build an model heart (and lungs)

We used blue liquid for deoxygenated blood, and red for oxygenated. In the lungs we had a grey liquid representing air.

We used different blocks to represent the different textures of the different tissues in the heart and lungs.

The more 'minecraft' able students installed some mods and were able to label different blood vessels and actually get them to pump liquid through to represent blood flow.

Performance Expectations

Students should be able to identify oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.

Students should show somehow how the valves work to prevent blood flowing in the wrong direction.

Extension - students could investigate the implication of a whole in the central heart chamber.
