Teachers should play the world themselves in preparation for the so they are familiar with the math models. The goal of this lesson is to prove why and how the long division algorithm works. It is best if the students have had some practice with the algorithm on paper before running this lesson. These math models are a great way to bridge the conceptual and procedural knowledge of the long division algorithm.
1) How do we divide large numbers?
2) Can there be regrouping in division?
3) What is an algorithm?
4) What operations are needed in the long division algorithm?
(division, multiplication, subtraction, and regrouping)
Big Idea: Dividing by place value can make dividing large numbers simple.
Working in small groups students will go into the world, watch instructional videos and build 8 long division problems in Minecraft. Students are encouraged to co-teach and share their knowledge with one another. Also the students need to be writing and solving the problem on paper as they build their math models. The teacher should facilitate and walk the room.

Problem 3: Long Division with Regrouping
Problem 4: Long Division with Regrouping and Remainders
The next three problems will not have tutorials to scaffold and will be counted in the performance expectations .
Problem 8: Record a Video of You Solving a Long Division Problem in Minecraft
Students will document their work in portfolios and structure block files.
Bonus Make a Video
When a team finishes all 3 problems they will work together on the 4th problem. Their goal will be making a “how to” video of them explaining how they solved the problem. This is a bonus activity but each person should try to make the video. If a student finishes a video they should help a teammate make one.
1) The student was able to make a video of them building and explaining a long division math model.
2) The student was able to independently be able to solve two long division problems in Minecraft.
3) The student was able to solve long division problems using the Base 10 algorithm on paper.
