### Learning Objectives

- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.6 Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

### Guiding Ideas

Start the lesson by discussing the following with your class:

1) How do we divide large numbers?

2) Can there be regrouping in division?

3) What is an algorithm?

4) What operations are needed in the long division algorithm?

(division, multiplication, subtraction, and regrouping)

**Big Idea: Dividing by place value can make dividing large numbers simple. **

### Student Activities

To begin, load the attached Minecraft world for Long Division. It's recommended that you play the world in preparation for to become familiar with the math models.

The goal of this lesson is to prove why and how the long division algorithm works. It is best if the students have had some practice with the algorithm on paper before running this lesson. These math models are a great way to bridge the conceptual and procedural knowledge of the long division algorithm.

Students will enter the world, watch instructional videos and build eight long division problems in Minecraft. Students are encouraged to co-teach and share their knowledge with one another. It is encouraged to have students be writing and solving the problems on paper as they build their math models.

Watch the Video Tutorial on dividing in Minecraft.

Problem 1: How to Divide in Minecraft

Problem 2: Base 10 Division in Minecraft

Problem 3: Long Division with Regrouping

Problem 4: Long Division with Regrouping and Remainders

Problems 5-7: Student practice the above concepts.

**Bonus Make a Video **

Problem 8: Bonus Activity: Record a Video of You Solving a Long Division Problem in Minecraft

Their goal will be to make a “how to” video explaining how they solved the problem. If a student finishes a video they should help a teammate make one.

### Performance Expectations

1) The student was able to independently be able to solve the long division problems in Minecraft.

2) The student was able to solve long division problems using the Base 10 algorithm on paper.

3) The student was able to make a video of them building and explaining a long division math model.
