Learning Objectives

  • • Students will create a world to use as the basis of the plot and illustrations of their narrative. • The aim is to have an area of the world to show the beginning, middle and end • Students will document their construction of the world to create a portfolio • Students will use screenshots of the finished product to use as pictures for their written pieces.

Guiding Ideas

The lesson is for students to develop their narrative writing skills as well as build collaborative skills between students. The aim is for students to understand the importance of setting, characters and plot in a story. The lesson caters for mixed abilities and students will use Minecraft as tool to create their own narrative visually and digitally before writing.

Prior to the lesson:

  • students will be exposed to a range of narratives and their features
  • discuss these features and in groups create their own world to use for their narratives

Student Activities

  1. Students will work in groups to plan out the areas that will depict scenes within the story.
  2. As students are building in MEE they will use the portfolio and the camera to make an album of what they are doing and of completed scenes.
  3. Students will then use the photo's as a guide for planning and writing their own narratives.
  4. The photos will also act as the illustrations for the narratives and will be turned into picture books making students authors and illustrators.
  5. Over the sessions students will collaborate regularly with other groups to give and receive feedback, thoughts and ideas on their work and the work of others.
