Challenge Let the Games Begin!

Challenge PDF document that provides the granularity for the steps of the Challenge

Learning Objectives

  • To create a new sport to feature in the Olympics
  • To design and build an appropriate pitch or arena for the sport to be played in
  • To explain ideas using features of Minecraft: Education Edition to give more information

Guiding Ideas

In this Challenge learners will work creatively to invent a new sport which could be played in the Olympics. They will research and compare current sports and where they are played. Then create a list of what they will need to consider e.g. rules, scoring, and equipment. Learners will then design a venue for their sport to be played in and create this using Minecraft: Education Edition. They will then make use of Minecraft: Education Edition features such as the chalkboard and NPCs (Non-Playing Characters) to share information about their sport, including instructions about how to play.

Introductory Questions:

  • How much space will be needed to play your sport? Think about the area and perimeter of your venue.
  • Where will spectators sit or stand?
  • What materials should be used?
  • What issues will you need to consider before and during the build?

Student Activities

The Challenge is made up of three distinct steps that will take approx. 3 hrs.

Step One:

  • Explore the variety of sports currently involved in the Olympics. Learners come up with a brand-new sport and provide instructions for how to play

Step Two:

  • Learners design a venue for their sport to be played on squared or graph paper, using Numeracy skills to plan the area and perimeter of the space needed and labelling different features

Step Three:

  • Learners will build their new venue using Minecraft: Education Edition and use features such as the chalkboard and NPCs to add written information explaining the rules of their sport
