"The journey of Food from the bin to the plate" helps to sensitize the students to the issue of Food wastage and encourage them to compost leftovers.

Learning Objectives

  • Students should be able to Identify the root cause of food waste
  • Students should be able to develop habits to reduce wastage of food and segregate it into recyclable and non recyclable
  • Students should be able to Analyze and Compost recyclable food

Guiding Ideas

  • Ask the students if they have heard about SDGs. If some of them do, let them speak up in class.
  • Start the lesson by introducing the Global Goals to the children using the video "The Global Goals".
  • Tell the students about the goals that have been chosen.
  • Which is the most affected area in the school / house where food is wasted most?

Methodology

In a hands on session in the computer lab, the students will be asked to use Bing and search for some ways in which we can reduce food waste in school. Also how to compost the waste generated from their meals like fruit peels and left overs. Using this information the students will create  a world where the various ways to reduce food waste will be demonstrated using classrooms, separate waste bins, composting pits, litter collectors etc.

Student Activities

  1. Enter the world and use appropriate keys to navigate to the classroom
  2. Learn from the boards given there about how to save food and segregate leftovers.
  3. After the lunch period go outside and put the waste in proper bins which are placed outside the classroom
  4. The students can take a cue from the NPCs
  5. In the activity period, they should place the wet waste / biodegradable waste into the composting pit
  6. Navigate to the school canteen and survey the waste disposal techniques
  7. Investigate how to help the canteen staff to segregate the waste into appropriate bins.
  8. Gather important items if any
  9. Discuss the main aim with the teacher and brainstorm for more ideas.

Performance Expectations

All students will:

  • Build a classroom and place 3 separate bins. one for dry waste such as paper, one for wet waste like fruit peels, bread sides and one for plastic waste

Most students will:

  • Create composting pits in the school garden. They will create NPCs to guide on how to compost.
  • They will use the chemistry update to create substances that can be used as a reusable packing material for food to be sold in the school canteen

Some students will

  • Come up with new ideas to save food and build a scenario.
  • They will record the sequence using camera
