Learning Objectives

  • Developing instructional writing in Minecraft: Education Edition

Guiding Ideas

In this Challenge learners will create an instruction book on how to build a simple house in Minecraft: Education Edition. The learners will create a flat world in creative mode. Their task will be to build a simple structure such as a house. As they build, they will use the camera to take photos of the build process e.g. a photo of the walls, then the windows, then the door etc. Once they have finished their build, they will need a book & quill. They will add the first photo they took and write instructions how to start the build. They will keep on adding the photos and write instructions for each until they have a whole set of instruction.

Introductory Question:

  • Could you help someone who isn’t familiar with Minecraft to build a house?

Student Activities

The Challenge is made up of four distinct steps that will take approx. 2hrs.

Step One:

  • Learners discuss instructional writing and read examples of instructions
  • Plan a task to help a novice to build using Minecraft by writing a set of instructions. This can be tailored to current/seasonal themes e.g. build Santa’s grotto

Step Two:

  • Learners to build their structures in Minecraft: Education Edition. Use camera to take photos of each step

Step Three:

  • Learners use Book and Quill to record instructions. On the first page they will add the first photo, and on the second page write the instructions how to start
  •  Encourage learners to include as much detail as possible. Learners keep adding a photo and writing instructions until the instructions are complete. The learners can then sign their book and place it in a chest in their house

Step Four:

  • Invite peers to read and test out their instructions
