Supporting Files

Geometry - Building Symmetry.mcworld.zip

This is a pre-built world if you'd like all your students to start with the same world when constructing their homes. This is an optional download.

DAY01 Minecraft Recipe Math

This uses Minecraft recipes to review ratios.

DAY02 Minecraft Transformations

This helps students practice navigating in Minecraft and reviews some basic concepts within transformational geometry.

DAY03 Minecraft Area and Volume

This gives students a chance to build, compare, and contrast areas and volumes.

DAY04 Minecraft Perimeter and Area

This provides an opportunity for students to measure using block width as a unit when using/comparing perimeter and area.

DAY05 Minecraft Stair Transformations

This helps students learn about transformations while also learning some advanced building techniques using stairs.

DAY06 - DAY10 Minecraft House Project - Written Assignment

This is the basis of the project where students will build a home. It includes directions as well as grading rubrics.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn how to use Minecraft while demonstrating geometric concepts.
  • Review concepts learned throughout a year of a geometry course.
  • Model geometry within a home design and building scenario.

Guiding Ideas

This project exceeded expectations.  Each one day activity helped students stretch their knowledge of Minecraft use as well as reviewed core concepts for Geometry.

The final home design came with conditions to keep students on task and to keep the quality bar high.  The big overarching question is how does Geometry get applied in building and playing games like Minecraft?

Student Activities

The following is included in the pdf:

  • (1 Day Lesson) Minecraft Recipe Math - Using recipes to practice ratios
  • (1 Day Lesson) Minecraft Transformations - Using blocks to demonstrate transformations
  • (1 Day Lesson) Minecraft Area and Volume - Using blocks to examine area and volume relationshipos
  • (1 Day Lesson) Minecraft Perimeter and Area - Using fences and blocks to examine how perimeter and are related and different.
  • (1 Day Lesson) Minecraft Stair Transformations - Learning how to build with stairs while examining the transformations involved.
  • (5 Day Project) Minecraft Building Symmetry - Build a house given a workflow document.  These pdf pages include rubrics for grading.

Performance Expectations

Students are expected to:

  • Perform the tasks directed within the pdf documents for days 1-5 and to follow the directions of the project and rubric provided.
  • Documentation is important so students are asked to take screen shots of their builds for the smaller activities and a video walkthrough using some screen capturing software for their final home build.
  • They're encouraged to exceed expectations!
