Students learn about the way in which artists take images from popular culture, examining the work of the French Street artist Invader.

Is appropriated art still real art?
Did the limitations of early computers and arcade machines lead to greater creativity?
Is Street Art just vandalism?
Students consider concepts associated with traditional art, which can be seen to be a one-off original idea, created by an artist and viewed in a gallery. They examine the way Street Art breaks with these conventions, often creating images outside in public spaces, sometimes without permission.
Students then look at the way Street Art not only challenges accepted ideas about art appearing in galleries but also the notion of originality. They look at different Street Artists who employ appropriation and ask if this art is still original or unique? Is it still considered art in the same way as artworks hung in galleries painted by old masters?
Students then move on to examining the work of the French Street Artist Invader. They focus on different examples of pixel art, learning some background information about the limited palette and resolution of early computers and the way in which these images have been “appropriated” by invader for use in his tiled works around the world.
Students then choose 3 artworks by the Invader and recreate these in a shared, flat 3D world. Placing a sign and each image which provides 3 details, the location, the year and the basis for the original image (the game which the original image was derived from).
Students research the work of the street artist invader selecting 3 images from his website.
They research the year, location and source of the image invader has created and create these in a shared space overseen by the teacher.
The students move around the space gathering information about 3 works by Invader (apart from the images they themselves chose)
The create a PowerPoint which includes a screen shot of their own work and 3 works from other students in the class with details about the information they have provided on each work.
Expectations are explicitly taught to students regarding respecting each other’s work and collaborating with each other in ways to create the space displaying the recreated works of Invader.
