Learning Objectives

  • Ontario 2020 Mathematics Expectations: Properties and Relationships B2.1 use the properties of operations, and the relationships between operations, to solve problems involving whole numbers, decimal numbers, fractions, ratios, rates, and whole number percents, including those requiring multiple steps or multiple operations
  • Mental Math B2.3 use mental math strategies to calculate percents of whole numbers, including 1%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 25%, and 50%, and explain the strategies used
  • Multiplication and Division B2.12 solve problems involving ratios, including percents and rates, using appropriate tools and strategies

Guiding Ideas

This world is designed to support Grade 6 Ontario mathematics exploration of topics covered in the 2020 curriculum for Number - Operations:

  • Fractions are part of a whole that can be described as decimals and modeled visually
  • Fractions with a denominator of 100 can be expressed easily as percentages or decimals
  • We can determine the percent of a number or the fractional value of things in a variety of ways, including modeling, counting on a hundreds grid, and division
  • Knowing that percent means "out of 100" allows us to perform calculations to determine missing values in a problem
  • Ratios are fractions used to describe two different quantities rather than parts of a whole

Student Activities

Students will: 

1. Enter the world individually or in groups and speak to the Get Started NPC to receive a camera, portfolio, and book&quill.

2. Explore the three roads of representation and use a documentation method of their choice to answer the questions posed by the signs and NPCs.

3. Share their answers with the class or teacher, as directed.

4. Create one or more visual or artistic representations and use signs to describe their creation(s) in terms of fractions & percent.

5. Create at least one ratio model and use signs to describe each part of the ratio shown.

6. Document their creative and math thinking using the camera & portfolio and export to share where directed.

Extension Option:

Challenge students to calculate and model a variety of "percent of number" problems focusing on 1%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 25%, and 50%.

Performance Expectations

  • Students should demonstrate an understanding that fractions, decimals, and percentages are different ways of describing the same values.
  • Students should be able to answer the questions posed independently, or with some support from peers or the teacher.
  • Students should be able to create their own percent models and ratio models and communicate the mathematics involved.
