Fairy Tales World


A Minecraft world to use as a catalyst for the project

Learning Objectives

  • To develop an understanding of traditional tales and how they have been adapted over time
  • To create a detailed plan a build setting from a ‘twisted fairy tale’ within Minecraft: Education Edition based on a success criteria
  • Build in Minecraft: Education Edition to portray a scene / architecture from their own twisted fairy tale
  • To learn how to use features (NPCS/boards/Chests/Portfolios etc) to relay information

Guiding Ideas

During this project learners will learn and investigate the following aspects:

  • Where do traditional fairy tales stem from?
  • Introduction to key authors
  • Learners will investigate various traditional tales
  • Learners will draft and plan their own ‘twisted’ fairy tale
  • Learners will create a scene/ piece of architecture from their ‘twisted’ fairy tale in Minecraft: Education Edition
  • Learners will use advanced features of Minecraft: Education Edition to retell their ‘twisted’ fairy tale
  • Learners will invite their peers to visit their world and experience their modified fairy tale

Introductory Questions:

  • What are the features of a fairy tale?
  • What is a ‘twisted’ fairy tale?
  • How do we plan a story setting in Minecraft?
  • How can use Minecraft: Education Edition to retell a ‘twisted’ fairy tale?

Student Activities

Introduction to Traditional Fairy Tales – 2 to 3 hours

  • Learners investigate a variety of authors and traditional tales - paying attention to how fairy tales have been modified over time
  • Learners record key information gathered from their research

Plan and write a ‘Twisted Fairy Tale’ – 3 + hours

  • Learners are introduced to a range of ‘twisted’ or modified fairy tales
  • Learners work independently to plan and write their own ‘twisted’ fairy tales

Plan & Build a Scene – 3 hours

  • Learners choose a setting from their stories to build in Minecraft
  • Learners create a plan to build designs in Minecraft
  • Learners build ‘twisted’ fairy tale settings

Retell a story using Minecraft: Education Edition features – 2+ hours

  • Learners use Minecraft: Education Edition features to retell their ‘twisted’ fairy tale to visitors: NPC’s, book and quill, boards

Peer Review/ Sharing with an Audience -2 hours

  • Learners invite peers to join their world and take a tour around their setting- engaging with the key features i.e. NPCs that learners previously created
  • Learners give constructive feedback to peers and modify settings accordingly
