Start by investigating these questions with your students:
1) Why do we round numbers?
2) What are the pros and cons of rounding numbers?
3) What strategies can you use to make rounding numbers easy?
To begin, students will load the attached Minecraft Math Gladiators world. They will enter the hub area, then speak to the Robot NPC named "Level 3". Students will speak the gameshow host to continue. They will watch the videos, then enter one of the colored rooms to answer problems.
Level 1 Elytra Course and Rounding Base 10 Numbers
Students will enter the single player world. Once the students are in the world they will encounter Mark Bigglesworth, Game Show Host. He will ask students if they want to start the puzzle or watch the tutorial on how to round base 10 numbers in Minecraft.
Once inside the puzzle rooms, students will see a number and be asked to round it to a certain place value. The students will document their work by taking a picture of the number using the camera feature. Answering the question, will open the door and the player will glide down to the exit using the elytra. Players will need to equip the elytra to their character in order to use them.
What are elytra?
Students will take notes on the game math models in their math notebooks.
Finish each of the four rooms to complete the activity.
