Learning Objectives

  • To explore how classrooms have changed over time
  • To design what a classroom might look like in 2050

Guiding Ideas

In the Challenge learners will explore how classrooms have changed throughout history. They will discuss what they think may change in the future and use these ideas to design a classroom for a school in 2050.

Introductory Questions: 

  • What things/ resources would you expect to see in a classroom today?
  • Would a classroom have looked the same 10, 20, 50 years ago?
  • What will a classroom look like in the future? What will be the same? How will it change?

 

Student Activities

The Challenge is made up of three distinct steps that will take approx. 2 hrs.

Step One

  • Explore how classrooms have changed over the years by looking at pictures online and speaking to parents/teachers
  •  Ask learners to focus on different decades – 60s, 70s 80s, etc. Learners discuss changes with peers and look for similarities and differences between time periods. Learners consider how the time period influenced how the classroom looked. Learners consider how a classroom of the future might be different to a classroom of today

Step Two

  • Learners create a plan for what a classroom might look like in 2050. Learners use squared paper when planning and designing their classroom and label the features
  •  Using their plan, learners build their ‘Class of 2050’ in Minecraft: Education Edition

Step Three

  • Learners consider how they could share their ‘Class of 2050’ with others
  • Evaluate classroom design, using features i.e. book and quill or NPC to add an explanation
