The Scheme of Work (SoW) provides an overarching view of the project and each Lesson Support document provides the granularity for each stage.

Learning Objectives

  • To understand how Celts used to live
  • To understand how a Celtic Roundhouse was made
  • To produce a descriptive piece of writing
  • Create a detailed plan of a Celtic roundhouse to facilitate a Minecraft: Education Edition build
  • To work collaboratively to build a Celtic roundhouse within Minecraft: Education Edition

Guiding Ideas

This series of lessons is designed to help learners understand how the Celts used to live and understand what a roundhouse would be like, to give them an idea of the daily life of a Celt in Wales.

It covers a range of skills including Descriptive Writing, Estimation and Measurement, Producing and Collaborating using Minecraft: Education Edition as well as Oracy and opportunities for outdoor learning. It culminates in the learners creating a Minecraft Celtic Roundhouse, using the information they have gathered in the previous four lessons.

Introductory Questions:

  • Why was a Celtic roundhouse built in this way?
  • What challenges would a Celt have faced when building a roundhouse?
  • What do you want to know about the roundhouse?
  • How will you build a circular shape with blocks?
  • How will you plan and build a Celtic roundhouse?

Student Activities

Understanding a Roundhouse 2+ hrs.

  • Learners study various sources of evidence of Celtic roundhouses. These could texts, images, video and artefacts
  • Learners use evidence to create their own, by drawing the outside and inside of a roundhouse

Describing a Setting 2+ hrs.

  • Learners use research to write a setting description of both inside and outside a Celtic roundhouse, using of figurative language to make writing lively and exciting

Interviewing a Celt 2+ hrs.

  • Learners write a list of questions they would ask a Celt about their lifestyle
  • Learners post questions on a Flipgrid and think in role to answer other learners’ questions

Estimating and Checking 2+ hrs.

  • Learners estimate 5m in length in the school yard with chalk and then measure to see how close they were. When accurately established 5m – draw a circle to create an accurately sized roundhouse
  • Learners draw items the Celts would need in their roundhouse

Plan a 3D Roundhouse 2+ hrs.

  • Learners create a 2D plan to inform their 3D build in Minecraft: Education Edition of a roundhouse using their knowledge from previous lessons to produce this accurately
  • Learners determine the size and dimensions (height, length, width) of their roundhouse. Then, through drawing on grid paper and group discussions, create a scale plan of their building

Build a 3D Roundhouse 3+ hrs.

  • Learners use Minecraft: Education Edition to create a roundhouse using their knowledge from previous lessons and their 2D plan to produce this accurately
