  • To construct a model of an ancient Roman building
  • To explain its purpose and significance to the ancient Romans and to the modern world
  • To identify its location in relation to other important Roman monuments

Guiding Ideas

1. What are the major monuments in ancient Rome?

2. Why were these monuments built?

3. How were these monuments used in ancient Rome?

4. Who is responsible for building these monuments?

Student Activities

Research on the monument should contain the following (use the Monument Information Chart in class notebook):

  • The Latin and English names of the monument
  • Date(s) of the building: beginning and ending of construction, date rebuilt if applicable, dates the monument was in use
  • Purpose of the building
  • Significance of the building to ancient Romans and to the modern world
  • Original building materials
  • Distinguishing features of the building
  • Location of the building in Rome
  • Historical figures associated with the building: architect, emperor, deity, patron, etc.
  • Additional information
    • Pictures or sketches of the monument when was in use, not how it currently looks

Once you and your partner complete the research on the monument, you should build the monument as it looked in Ancient Rome in the correct location in regards to the other monuments.

You should also build a wooden sign in front of your monument and write the information listed above on your sign.
