Learning Objectives

  • Town planning provides a policy framework for coordinating different aspects of the physical environment such as: • location of housing, commercial and industrial uses; • roads, water and sewerage infrastructure; and • Open space and recreation areas.

Guiding Ideas

What do Villages want and need in a new suburb?

What information do we need about the land?

How do we plan the suburb and get land title approved?

How do we know if it is a successful design?

Student Activities

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Challenge:
You are a land development company. Your job is to turn land into plots, roads and fun places so people can buy the plots and move there.  You have bought a section of land to be developed into a suburb for Villages

Here is the hard bit!

You are NOT allowed to break one block of the land until ALL plans have been approved! You need to survey the land, determine the layout, draw the plans showing all the information you need to develop the land for title.
You must have the lots set to the average prices on your local area.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EMPATHIZE:
Watch the Interview with the Villages
Get to know what they want in their new modern suburb:

  • Who are they?
  • What do they want?
  • What do they need?
  • What do they hate about their current village?

Ideas:

  • Make a newspaper report covering the bad deal Villagers have and their demands for better living.
  • Oral Discussion and note taking

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DEFINE:

What do we need to know about the land?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IDEATE:

  • Make a photocopy of the aerial photo  and allow students to draw out their plans and write reflections on the design and the learning process
  • Have the students draw topographic maps and use them to deign the suburb.
  • Have students go into the world taking screenshots giving a tour of where the suburb and its features  will be.

Students must have their Define and Ideate documentation complete and approved  before moving on to the next step.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PROTOTYPE

  • Have students go into the world taking screenshots giving a tour of where the suburb and its features  will be.
  • Make the plots, streets and all the features in the game!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EVOLVE

  •  If you had more time what would you improve?
  • Evaluate the whole learning process.

EXTENSION:

  • Build a house or two for the villages! Add the gardens. Get Villages to pose in front of the house and take photos!
  • Write a newspaper article as though you have interviewed the Villager family.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Performance Expectations

Assessment Criteria:

  • Able to state who the Villages are,  their needs and wants in detail.
  • Able to understand and read a map of the land
  • Able to make a map at their learning standard.
  • Able to make a cross section showing the land gradients and water flow.
  • Able to make a series of designs showing ideas for the suburb layout.
  • Presentation showing the final design completed in Minecraft Includes streets, street lights, parks, walkways school and plots. How much detail is up to the time allocated, the level of students.
