Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to research and identify features of Minecraft biomes. Students will be able to compare and contrast real world environments with Minecraft biomes. Students will be able to document their learning using Minecraft tools (camera and portfolio). Students will be able to design and make an appropriate house design in a Minecraft biome which will show their knowledge of gathering, crafting, protecting and farming materials appropriate to the environment.

Guiding Ideas

  • What are the similarities and differences between real world environments and Minecraft biomes?
  • How can climate influence the vegetation and animals found in different Minecraft biomes?
  • What is the importance of natural vegetation to animals and people?
  • What materials (that are available in your biome) would be suitable for a house design?

Student Activities

Task 1:

In groups of 3, students will connect to the same Biome world (via share seed option) and explore the natural vegetation and animals found in that environment. For 4 weeks, students will explore a new biome and complete the worksheets attached. These Minecraft lessons will be taught in collaboration with lessons that explore real world environments and the same worksheet will be completed to compare and contrast.

  • Week 1: Snow Biome= -1237332647 / Real world snow environment: https://goo.gl/KLWDLG
  • Week 2: Desert Biome= 961601796 /Real world desert environment: https://goo.gl/NhPgXx
  • Week 3: Jungle Biome= 1558083136 / Real world rainforest environment: https://goo.gl/4dXaRW
  • Week 4: Mesa Biome= 128388 / Real world arid environment: https://goo.gl/xqVg7v

Students will need to use the camera and portfolio items to document their learning through each Biome. (Open the world in Creative Mode and add the items to inventory. Then use command: /gamemode S to change it back to survival mode)

Task 2:

In groups of 3, students will need to make a liveable house in a biome they have previously explored or experienced in gameplay. Students need to do this in survival mode.

It is important that they:

  • Gather natural resources found in the biome to craft blocks, items, etc that they will use to create a suitable house
  • Craft items and equipment that will be important to their survival and house design
  • Protect their avatar from the elements including animals, weather, mods, etc
  • Farm appropriate fruits/vegetables that will grow in their biome for healing and health-bar

Some example house designs to inspire their creativity can be found in the document "Supporting student guide".

Biome seeds for house design:

  • Normal plain (Easy): 654775433
  • Mesa (medium): 128388
  • Jungle (medium): 1558083136
  • Snow (hard): -1237332647
  • Desert (very hard): 961601796

Performance Expectations

  • Students will complete research tables documenting natural resources, native animals, plants/vegetation and interesting facts for both the Minecraft biome and the real world environment.
  • Students will be able to compare and contrast each biome with their real world counterpart.
  • Students will use the camera and portfolio items to document their learning in game.
  • Students will collaborate with a small group and share their learning.
