Students unlock doors of rooms with diamonds by setting the binary code on levers. They learn how to work with binary numbers.

### Guiding Ideas

Mini-Lesson (whole class) :

Depending on the subject area and the age of the students - Introduce concept of binary number system, bit, byte, … possibly information about storage devices, ways of storing information… (Information and Communication Technology) - find all possible 4-digit numbers made up digits 0 or 1 with students (Math, combinatorics, tree diagram)

Create numbers 0-15 in binary system with students (Younger students could get a table with these)

Optional use of MS Excel to create a table of binary numbers or also a conversion table using mathematical functions

### Student Activities

Searching and decoding binary digits in the Minecraft world :

Students choose a team leader, agree on a strategy and ensure that all team members know (or have a table with) binary numbers 0-15

Students search the uploaded minecraft world “Binary code.mcworld” and unlock the doors by setting the binary code on levers.

There are 16 rooms (numbers from 0 to 15, their binary codes active unlock) and 19 diamonds. In room with number 2 there is a flint and steel. Students can light the nether portal. In nether they can find room number 1 with 4 diamonds.

Students communicate by minecraft chat.

Before the time is up team leaders ensure that their team members have passed them obtained diamonds. They may ensure it continually because meetings at the agreed place are a challenging task for communication, coordination and the orientation in space.

### Performance Expectations

- The number of diamonds in hotbar of team leaders, the number of not handed over diamonds in hotbar of team members, “Binary code.mcworld” with empty rooms.

- Tables of binary numbers, conversion tables created in MS Excel

What is bit?

How many numbers can be encoded by 4 bits ?

How is number 12 written in binary code?

Which decimal number corresponds to binary number 1001?
