Guiding Ideas

In this lesson students will learn about Frank Lloyd Wright, usonian architecture, and Loren Pope. Students are encouraged to enhance this project with their own research. The lesson will focus around a field trip to the Pope-Leighey House in Alexandria, Virginia.

What is usonian architecture, and for whom did Wright intend to own the homes?

What are the characteristics of the usonian style?

Learn about Frank Lloyd Wright and his impact on American architecture.

Learn the story of Loren Pope.

 

Student Activities

Reconstruct the Pope-Leighey House in Minecraft.

Build and furnish a Usonian style home in Minecraft.

Visit the Pope-Leighey House or other Usonian home.

Performance Expectations

Students are expected to work together or independently to research Frank Lloyd Wright and the usonian style with guidance from the teachers. The students will recreate the Pope-Leighey House or design their own usonian homes in Minecraft. After the field trip, students will be expected to note the differences between their builds and the original home. Students will also compare their own real-world homes to the usonian home. Students will be encouraged to return to their builds and make any desired adjustments.
