Learning Objectives

  • 1) To learn the importance of staying safe and healthy on farms 2) To work as a collaborative team to plan, design, and build your own farm for tourism and entrepreneurship.

Guiding Ideas

1. Teachers should read the Best Management Plan for Agritourism handout

  • https://www.lsuagcenter.com/topics/community/community_dev/agritourism/publications/best_managment_practices/agritourism-best-management-practices-and-plan-of-operation

2. Students should start thinking about what agritourism is, and why health and safety is important in agritourism

  • Planning for guests:

  • Design considerations

  • Hayride safety

  • Agritourism example
    • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWalNEV1wXk

3. Before starting the Minecraft activities, teachers should discuss the concept of agritourism with their students. Use the following questions to help guide the discussion:

  • What is agritourism
  • What are the benefits of agritourism?
  • What are some health hazards?
  • What are other potential hazards (injury)?

Student Activities

Each group will be tasked with putting together their own Agritourism farm in Minecraft. Each student should be designated a different task. You can allow students to divide up tasks, or you can do it for them. Walk them through the following tasks in order for them to plan, design, and build in Minecraft.

1. TASK 1: divide students into groups of 4.

  • INDIVIDUAL TASKS: Provide each group with the four farm specialist cards. Each student should pick only one card, so that each group of 4 has each of the 4 color cards. Provide students with enough time to read their  cards, and discuss in their groups some of the potential items from each  category they would like to include in their agritourism farms.
    • `Food (RED)
    • Animals (BROWN)
    • Flowering and ornamental plants (PURPLE)
    • Non-plant/animal activities (BLUE)

2. TASK 2: Planning sessions for specialist groups

  • Restructure the groups, so that all the Red students are together (all the food students), all of the Purple are together, Blue together, and brown together. Hand out the planning session cards. Have them read through the questions on their card, and discuss some of the problems and issues they should be concerned with. Have each of them take notes on things to consider during designing their farm. They will take this information back to their groups.

3. TASK 3: Group debriefing session and planning

  • Bring the groups back together to debrief each other on things they need to address when they build their agritourism farm.
  • When they are ready, provide students (1 each per group) with the yellow and green cards. Allow them to discuss these items in their own groups. There should be some overlap on these cards.
    • Health and safety (ORANGE)
    • Security (ORANGE)
    • Buildings (GREEN)
    • Farm grounds (GREEN)
  • When the students are ready, have a general debriefing session with the entire class. What are some commonalities among the groups?

4. TASK 4: Farm design

  • The students should now be ready to put their ideas on paper. Use the grid template to create a blueprint for their farm. Provide the students with the black colored cards to demonstrate some of the items available to them to build their farms. The farm space is 160 x 120 blocks in size. There is a small farmhouse on the property that can be used for things like activities, restrooms, concessions, sleeping, etc.

5. TASK 5: Design their farm in Minecraft.

  • The students can now take their blueprints and create their design in Minecraft. It should be on creative mode, as they should be able to use any item that they need to build. Have students take photos of their finished design.

Performance Expectations

Students should be able to discuss agritourism

  • Students should be able to think about planning and designing an agritourism operation, considering any potential health and safety concerns
  • Students should present their findings in a report or presentation. Use the following format as a guideline:
    • Introduction: Have students/groups describe agritourism, along with health and safety on farms
    • Methods: Have them describe the planning, design, and development of their farm. How did they address health and safety issues?
    • Results: Have them show their screenshots of their site, paying specific focus to ways they addressed health and safety
    • Discussion: Have them describe the importance of why they chose to take specific actions on health and safety, such as including hand washing stations, and adding educational signs.
