A Pacific Northwest Coast Experience

09 Oct 2023 In the world of Minecraft, two Coast Salish people standing in a traditional home

The Pacific Northwest Coast Experience was created by Microsoft Canada, in collaboration with kʷikʷəƛə ̓m (Kwikwetlem First Nation) and School District 43 (Coquitlam) as part of their ongoing work to create more inclusive gaming ecosystems and elevate content that resonates with communities while increasing awareness of their unique perspectives and artistry.

Travel back in time to assist a coastal community to prepare for winter. Help the village by sustainably harvesting natural resources to ensure food security not only for the winter but for always.

Can you cooperate and follow protocols to complete harvesting tasks without damaging the environment on which the people, plants, and animals depend? Harvest cedar bark and planks for weaving and building. Pull a salmon from a gillnet to bring to the smokehouse. Harvest and maintain a camas field and collect salmonberries. Can players take what they’ve learned from elders and knowledge keepers to construct a new sustainable village up the coast?

Learn about the rich culture and traditional ecological knowledge that the Coastal Peoples have maintained since time immemorial. Explore the world with a STEAM lens, discovering incredible cross-curricular connections in a holistic learning environment. Visit A Pacific NW Coast Experience and find out how this world can help you engage your students in rich in-world and real-world STEAM learning.
