Your move: CHESSssss is here

08 Oct 2026 Minecraft characters, including a rooster in sunglasses, gather beside a gold trophy and a giant chessboard in a forest.

There’s a Chessboard in your Minecraft Village.

Actually, there are quite a few of them, and somewhere beyond the Village Hub, a rooster thinks he's got your number.

Welcome to CHESSssss, a new Minecraft Education experience where the world’s oldest strategy game gets a whole lot blockier. Whether you already know your forks from your pins or are still wondering why the horse moves like that, CHESSssss gives you and your students a place to learn, practice, and get better one move at a time.

Minecraft CHESSssss is built for first-time players, aspiring chess masters, classrooms, clubs, coaches, and anyone who looks at a chessboard and immediately wants to know what happens next.

Enter the Village Hub, pick a path, find the pawns, and beat the rooster. And above all, protect your king!

Black and white Minecraft chess pieces are set up for a match on a giant checkered board.

Start in the Village. See Where the Board Takes You.

Every player begins in the Village Hub, where four different paths lead into four ways to play: Tutorial, Story, Free Play, and Puzzle Mode. Beginners can start with the basics, experienced players can jump into tougher challenges, and anyone with a competitive streak can head straight for a match.

Learn the Moves

Not entirely sure what a bishop does? Start there. Forgot how castling works? We’ve got you.

Interactive lessons let players learn how each piece moves and captures, then dig into special moves like castling, pawn promotion, and en passant. Highlighted spaces show possible moves right on the board, so players can learn by making them.

Eight Biomes. Eight Opponents.

Story Mode sends players across eight Minecraft biomes, taking on a new opponent in each one. Your first challenger?

Rooster Cool.

As players progress, matches become more demanding. Opponents introduce stronger defenses, tactical strikes, forks, pins, traps, sacrifices, and increasingly sophisticated play.

Minecraft characters play chess at a table in a village, near portals labeled Story Mode and Free Play Mode.

Think You See Checkmate? Prove It.

Then there’s the Puzzle Tower. Inside are 60 tactical chess puzzles, ranging from one-move checkmates for newer players to three-move challenges for players ready to think several steps ahead. Make the wrong move and the puzzle resets, giving you another chance to study the board, rethink your plan, and try something different.

Or Forget All That and Play Your Way

Want a quiet, untimed match to test a new strategy? Do it.

Free Play Mode lets players customize matches for practice, competition, or tournaments, with adjustable timers, single-player and multiplayer options, unlocked biomes, and different chess-piece styles.

Also: We Hid Things

Naturally.

Sixteen hidden pawns are scattered throughout the world, rewarding the players who can’t resist checking behind buildings, wandering off the path, or asking, “Wait, can I get up there?”

Find them and you can unlock trophies and bonus content.

Chess Is About Thinking

Chess naturally asks players to recognize patterns, weigh consequences, plan ahead, and adapt when a strategy fails. CHESSssss gives students a space to practice those skills through tutorials, puzzles, exploration, and competition.

And because there isn’t one perfect way to learn, students can approach the game differently: following a guided lesson, puzzling through a checkmate, battling their way across the biomes, exploring the world, or simply sitting down across from another player and saying:

Your move.
