Learning objectives
Students will learn about basic elements.
Students will show mastery of basic compounds.
Guiding ideas
The goal of Ionic World is for students to get a review of basic elements, their properties, and charges in Stage 1. Then students will show more advanced mastery of compounds and the equations need to complete basic compounds in stages 2-3. Finally, students will have a timed assessment over what they reviewed in stages 1-3.
Student activities
Stage 1 Students will be asked questions about the following elements:
- Sodium
- Bromine
- Potassium
- Iodine
- Phosphorus
- Calcium
- Oxygen
- Lithium
- Sulfur
- Magnesium
- Chlorine
- Fluorine
Students will have to know the equation for the following compounds:
- Sodium bromide
- Potassium iodide
- Sodium phosphide
- Calcium oxide
- Lithium sulfide
- Calcium chloride
- Magnesium chloride
- Aluminum fluoride
Stage 2 Students will need to know the charges of the following elements:
- Lithium
- Hydrogen
- Barium
- Iron
- Strontium
- Aluminum
- Lead
- Iodine
- Fluorine
- Sulfur
- Oxygen
- Nitrogen
Students will have to know the equation for the following compounds:
- Barium nitride
- Lithium sulfide
- Aluminum fluoride
- Hydrogen oxide
- Lead oxide
- Iron II nitride
- Strontium fluoride
Stage 3 Students will need to know information about the following:
- Hydrochloric acid
- Sodium chloride
- Hydroxide
- Diamonds (elements that make it up)
- Chlorate
- Acetate
- Bicarbonate
- Ammonium
Stage 4 Stage 4 is a speed round. Students will choose the path (there are several), of the correct compound trail in order to get to the evil pillager machine in time to stop it. As soon as students press the “I’m ready!” button they will receive an extra 45 seconds (in addition to the points they have accumulated), the barrier block will be removed and the race begins. They will need to answer three questions at the end of the trail, before their time runs out, to stop the machine.
Performance expectations
Students will be expected to recall element charges & characteristics as well as compound equations. Stage 1 will take significantly longer than any other stage because it serves as the majority of the review. The remaining stages are more of an informal assessment of student knowledge.
