Learning Objectives

  • Students will complete a Skype Field Trip with The Aquarius Team (Optional)
  • Students will collaboratively build the fictitious Aquarius Habitat II after Hurricane Irma has badly damaged AH1. (That part is true)
  • Students will review media, plans and notes from those involved with AH1 to better understand what needs to be applied and changed for AH2.
  • Students will explore trenches, AH1, Two Temples and a coral reef beneath the sea once their new Habitat has been completed as a team.

Guiding Ideas

Can students apply what they learned via Skype Field Trips to a new Reef Lab?

Can students adjust requirements for 4 divers to 30 divers effectively?

Can students use critical thinking to design a Reef Lab for science study that is safe?

Can students build air gazebos and other innovations that improve diver safety and the Reef lab concept based on talks with experts and science.

Can students read plans for AH1 and create similar plans for AH2?

Can students communicate why they added certain features and why others were left unchanged or absent?

Student Activities

Complete a Skype Field Trip with The Aquarius Team

Plan AH2 design for Florida International University's Media Aquarius Program

View media, plans, and talk with experts or NPCs to determine what is needed for AH2 and what worked best for AH1.

Collaboratively Build AH2 on the seafloor just meters away from AH1

Explore deep sea trenches, caves, AH1, two temples and a huge coral reef as a dive team and capture pictures and record notes in portfolios.

Reflect on the experience.

Performance Expectations

Complete Skype Field Trip (Optional)

Complete Build of Aquarius Habitat II for FIU and NASA

Explore surroundings as dive team capturing pictures and notes

Reflect on the experience and if the Skype Session better prepared students for the tasks.
