Learning Objectives

  • Sculpture Principles of Balance & Movement, Mass & Void, Gravity & Elevation, Frontal & In-The-Round.
  • The ability to ideate various Sculptural designs
  • Drawing Geometrical Sculptures in 3D using 2 point perspective
  • Use of Minecraft to create, design and critique Sculptural principles in a virtual environment

Guiding Ideas

How might you design Sculpture that uses the sculpture principles of Balance & Movement, Mass & Void, Gravity & Elevation, Frontal & In-The-Round?

Students learn how to design a sculpture with consideration to and use of sculptural elements.

Student Activities

Lesson One:

  • Get a hook - show students sculptural works to help form their ideas, an inspirational video, something that gets ideas going.
  • Fishbowl discussion about sculptural elements - Teacher lead.
  • Students respond to the HMW question by creating a visual brainstorm of possible ideas.
  • From the brainstorm students select the one that meets the learning objectives.

Lesson Two:

  • Prototype the design with paper. Students create a 3D sculpture out of paper. Construction.
  • Teacher leads the 2 - point perspective process. Students develop their design using the technique

Lesson Three:

  • Get into Minecraft!
  • Students all have a space with their name to create and develop their sculpture.
  • Feedback is given to students from their peers.
  • Students respond and make changes.
  • Students share their learning to the world by creating a video reflection on their work and how it show the sculptural elements. This goes onto YouTube
